North-East Discovery

The north-east of Brazil is a beautiful and fascinating part of the country with a vast and spectacular coastline, vibrant cities rich in history, delicious cuisine, and a uniquely Brazilian energy. On this 12-day self-drive tour from Salvador to Recife it is easy to find deserted beaches and avoid mass tourism.

Highlights: Salvador – Praia do Forte – Penedo – Maragogi – Olinda

As a self-drive itinerary this holiday offers a great deal of flexibility for exploring the north-east at your own pace. If you are interested in seeing anywhere in particular, or would like to spend more time in any of the destinations this will be no problem. If you would like to extend the trip you can continue driving North (or fly if you would prefer) and visit the wonderful beach town of Pipa, close to Natal. Another great extension to this itinerary would be to visit Chapada Diamantina National Park, approx. 400km inland from Salvador.

Days 1-3

Salvador

Fly into Salvador (usually via Europe). Upon arrival you will be met and transferred to your hotel.

Salvador da Bahia, the capital city of the state of Bahia, and Brazil’s former capital, is a vibrant city rich in African culture where traditions are kept and visible in the religion, dance, music, martial art form capoeira and cuisine.

The Pelhourinho district, the historical city centre, has a range of hotels with a bit of character making an ideal base from which to explore the area with its cobbled streets, bars, restaurants, churches, squares and shops.

We can book a variety of activities for you such as a trip to the local market followed by a cooking experience, a city tour where you can learn about the history of Salvador and visit a number of churches and sights of interest. We can also arrange for you to see a Candomble ceremony or a capoeira performance.

Days 4-5

Praia do Forte

Begin the self-drive and head north along the Coconut Highway to the picturesque beach town Praia do Forte.
Praia do Forte was once a quiet fishing village and has now become a friendly and picturesque beach destination. With boutique shops, an array of cafes and bars, and a laid back vibe it makes a great beach break close to Salvador.

You might also be interested in visiting the Tamar sea-turtle project or heading out to the Sapiranga Forest Reserve.

Day 6

Penedo

Continue along the coastal road to Penedo, a charming colonial town sitting on the Sao Francisco river.

This is a quiet town virtually untouched by tourism.
If you would prefer to stay on the coast we can suggest a couple of alternatives depending on your preferences.

Days 7-9

Maragogi

Continue driving north until you reach your accommodation situated on a stunning stretch of beach. This is a spectacular part of the country and typical of the striking coastline of the North East.
There are a number of activities you can do here such as walking, boat trips, snorkelling, bathing in rock pools, and we recommend a visit to the manatee sanctuary where you are highly likely to see these endangered animals up close in their natural habitat.

Days 10-11

Olinda

The final drive will take you north bound once more to Recife. After dropping off the car at the car hire office within the airport, you will be met and transferred to neighbouring Olinda, a UNESCO heritage site and a colonial gem.

Olinda is one of the prettiest towns in Brazil, with its red tile roof tops, brightly coloured colonial buildings and views over the coast, it is a lovely place to explore. There is a large artist community in Olinda and you can visit museums, artist’s workshops and art galleries as well as beautiful old churches. There are some excellent restaurants, as well as plenty of lively bars and cafes.
Olinda is a marvellous place for strolling and stumbling across galleries, live music and interesting finds. We can organise a city tour for your stay here to help give you your bearings, some history and point you in the direct of some of the quirky shops and artist’s studios.
